How to curl with a wand!

People sent so many pictures to me after they used my video with the curling iron (I loved it!), that I figured everyone was ready for a video on how to use a curling wand.  A curling wand is similar to a curling iron, but it doesn't have a spring clasp on it to hold the hair. Instead you use your fingers to hold the hair in place. Sounds exciting, right?

I use a NUME curling wand.  You can purchase them right from the website at www.numeusa.com, or at Ulta.  The one I use is a 1 inch wand, and runs about $70. If you follow NUME on Facebook or Instagram, they run specials all the time and you can usually snag one for around $40.

I love my wand and use it almost daily.  It heats up and cools off so nicely and I also really like the shape of the wave it produces.

To curl with a wand you begin just like a curling iron.  I part my hair depending on how curly I want it.  I prep it with Rusk working hair spray and I start curling.  You are really just wrapping your hair around a hot wand and holding it there with your fingers.  It does take some practice to avoid burning yourself, but you can also use the glove to help prevent the burns. Happy curling!

Curling 101

A big trend in the hair world is having that wavy semi-curled hair look.  Today I am going to show you one way to get that look.  In this video I demonstrate how to get those curls using a one-inch Hot Tools curling iron.

I always begin by prepping my hair with some flexible hair spray, nothing too stiff. It needs to be something I can work with a little.  I love Rusk flexible hair spray.  From there I just section my hair and begin curling.  I didn't want a super curly look today, so I used bigger sections to curl.  Once all curled I like to rake my fingers through it to break up the hair a little. I finish it off with Bed Head Master Piece Hairspray which is a heavy hold hair spray.

Both the products and the curling iron mentioned above can be found on Amazon or at Ulta!
If you are looking for a new curling iron, Hot Tools is a great option. They are priced well and they work so nicely.  The link below for the curling iron on Amazon is a fantastic price!

The Braid with Many Names

This braid goes by many names including Dutch Braid, Boxer Braids, and Inside-Out Braid.  I refer to it as a Dutch Braid.  This braid is basically a reverse French Braid.  In a French Braid you are pulling the sections of hair over each other, while in a Dutch Braid the sections of hair are going underneath each other.

It takes a little mind training to reverse your thinking and takes some time to get your hands to work that way. This braid probably requires the most practice in terms of holding the hair just right, but the results are so cute and give a different twist to a traditional braid.

The video is a great reference to watch the motion and how I am holding the hair. Good luck!

Lice, Lice, Baby

Lice! I know it is the topic that no one wants to read about because your head will be itching soon. If you have children in elementary schools or daycares, lice is something on your radar.

While many think that lice can jump or fly, they cannot. They are spread by hats, combs, brushes or sitting close to someone with it, as they can crawl from one thing to the next.  This is a good reminder to make sure your kids know to not share such items with other kids at school.

One product that we have found and have LOVED is the FairyTales Rosemary Repel line.  It is made of Rosemary, Citronella, Tea Tree and Geranium oil.  It is hydrating and soothing for the scalp, and effective and safe for the whole family to use.

My kids shower every other day and use it each time they shower.  We also use the Rosemary Repel conditioning spray to help when we brush out hair.  Then each morning after their hair is combed and done we give it a spray of Rosemary Repel hairspray.  I even use it on son and my littlest who doesn't  have very much hair yet. I figure it doesn't hurt and so far it has helped to keep our house lice free.

Now if you do get lice, no need to panic.  FairyTales has a Lice Good-Bye Natural treatment, along with Terminator Nit Free comb.  It is very easy to use, as you just take the treatment and throughly saturate their hair with the foam, let it sit for 15 mins and and begin combing in small sections to remove the nits.  Once you have combed through the head, wash their hair with water to remove the product. Repeat treatment as needed. Since the products are natural, you do not have to wait to repeat the process.

We hope you all love FairyTales as much as we do! They are safe, effective, smell great, and have kept us lice free!

Heart Braid

The heart braid is the perfect braid just in time for Valentine's Day.  I love this braid! It looks complicated, but really is not much different then a regular French braid. The main differences are where you start your braid and that you are only adding hair on the outside of the head. This makes the heart shape and keeps the center smooth. The video best explains and shows how to create this braid.

French Braid

The French braid is an easy, basic braid that always looks cute. I love to do a French braid on Kinsley a couple days a week because it is fast, and looks nice.

First start with nicely brushed hair.  We like to use The Wet Brush (Link below) which can be used on wet or dry hair and does not pull when getting snarls out.

Once the hair is all brushed, divide the hair into two sections along the part.

Start at the front of the hairline with a triangle section.

Spilt the triangle in three parts and begin your cross over motion, like the picture on the right.

From there you do the same motion all along the head: drop one side, add more hair, crossover, and repeat.

At the end of the braid we like to secure them with Goody Ouchless clear elastic and give it a spray with Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel hair spray (links below). Not only does the hair spray keep little fly aways in place, but it helps prevent lice.

Watch the video below for more instruction, along with being able to see what the crossover motion looks like. Thanks for reading!
